1.
Wild 05:10
Wild When the leaves stir with sound And the light is peaking I lift my feet from the ground I rapturously see My happiness is nothing My clothes are nothing And when I hear the wild call I'll be traveling on. I'm traveling on. In the arms of all that raised me I'm carried home To the depths of a dreaming child. Among the shadows we were born Always in search of something more
2.
Not A Mechanical Dance of Atoms Well you speak just like your mother With distinction of your father Brought in love Brought in love And there's books all on the table As fears surround your fable Stand your ground The spirit you have found You are within my bones You are within my bones Understand Like an unforgotten friend And you walk against your brother But find him by your side God above God above You are within my bones You are within my bones Brought in love Brought in love And rivers running deeper Just to tell me you're the same God above God above I am alive again I am alive again I am alive again
3.
Under The Wave In the dawn of light I break The attachments of your line Till my body breaks I'll love The fire in your bones At tomorrow time I'll reach out For the hunger in the breeze And I'm going under Under the wave And I'm going under Under the wave When tomorrow comes I'll breathe you I'll breathe you
4.
Lost River 03:04
5.
Erased 06:00
Erased I walk along the floor boards in your house I'm quiet but you know my mind is loud. I haven't seen your color in a little while I've been dreaming of the places you'll go. And I've been erased. You took me to the start And filled my heart with change And I've been saved I'm breaking down the walls I built Not frightened by the terrors they filled I look to you and you stare right back at me Been wondering for a while now who id be And I've been erased. You took me to the start And filled my heart with change And I've been saved And I've been erased. You took me to the start And filled my heart with change And I've been saved I've been saved I've been saved
6.
Look Around 04:02
Look Around Look around What will you be? From the highest mountain To the stirring sea Look around What do you see? The lives of friends Meant for jubilee So what if we're purposed? What if we're loved? What if we mean something more than we're taught? Look around What do you feel? Maybe we are this way For something real

about

After being held away in a recording studio for eight months, Marshall Lewis is releasing his second EP, Learned, locally on November 10th. Lewis co-produced the EP with his manager and engineer, Kevin Flick (Puddlegum). Both are perfectionists in the studio, unafraid of tossing songs after spending several weeks on them. Learned comprises six songs, including an instrumental track that splits the EP and sets the tone for the second half.

These six songs feature their dear friend, Jeff Hockett (Jake Dodds), on pedal steel, and Andrew Henry on viola. Jeff tracked pedal steel for two songs, Not A Mechanical Dance of Atoms, and and instrumental, Lost River. Andrew Henry provided layers of viola that intersperse the second track and paints the landscape for the stirring instrumental.

Lewis recorded all of the instruments for three songs: Erased, Under the Wave, and Look Around. Marshall fingerpicked acoustic guitar, classical guitar, and electric guitar, and also tracked banjo, keys, percussion, and nearly all of the vocals on the EP. “Nothing is auto-tuned on this EP, which attests to Marshall’s determination of tracking until we have the right take. The studio brings out his creativity, and I sometimes struggle to keep up as he instinctively lays down layer after layer.” explains Kevin Flick.

Videographer and drummer Zak Stoldt (The Stills) tracked drums and percussion for Not A Mechanical Dance of Atoms, and is producing a music video for Look Around and Lost River. Stoldt is Marshall’s live drummer, and has become and integral part of the band. Drew Cox (Jake Dodds) skillfully laid the percussion for the opening track, Wild. Wild also features Peter Frey (Kazyak) on electric guitar, and Robert Widlowski on bass. Stephen Baker also backs Marshall on vocals on the opening song.

Dick Huey of Toolshed (Sufjan Stevens, Merge Records) has called the EP, “Brilliant music.” Marshall Lewis is planning a PR campaign with Toolshed, set to begin in January.

“[Marshall Lewis] is still a young soul dealing with old issues but now from the vantage point of someone who has punched through the tangled webs of myriad volatile emotions, mastered his crafts in the process, and left a platonic, beseeching love letter to the world” (NUVO). ... more
